Before disassembling the shear, assess the current state. Look for visible nicks, a "crunchy" feel when closing, or a "pushing" of the hair. Perform a dry cut test on a single-ply tissue; if it snags or tears rather than slicing cleanly, the edge is compromised.
Professional shears must be fully disassembled. Remove the tension screw, ball bearings, and clicker plates. Clean away all hair clippings, dried chemicals, and old oil using a soft cloth and a specialized cleaning solution to ensure you are working on pure steel.
The Ride Line is the flat, polished inner surface of the blade where the two blades meet. Using a high-grit ride line tool (often 6000 to 8000 grit), lightly hone the ride line to ensure it is perfectly flat. This is crucial for the "scissor action" that allows the blades to bypass each other smoothly.
Using a professional sharpening jig, match the factory's original convex or bevel angle.
Precision is key: Even a 1^\circ deviation can change how the shear performs.
The goal is to remove the absolute minimum amount of metal to restore the "sweet spot" of the edge.
After sharpening, a microscopic "burr" (wire edge) will form. This must be carefully removed using a deburr and a polishing strop. This step ensures the blade is "razor sharp" rather than "saw-tooth sharp," preventing hair from being shredded during a cut.
Shears are not straight; they have a slight inward curve (the set) so they only touch at the point of the cut. After reassembly, check that the blades aren't overlapping too tightly or gapping. Adjust the tension screw so the blades close with a soft, controlled glide—not a free-fall drop.
The final check should involve three materials:
Wet Tissue: To check for "folding" at the tips.
Synthetic Hair: To check for "sliding" (hair pushing away from the pivot).
Real Hair: To ensure a "butter-smooth" feel that doesn't pull or pinch.
